Sony VAIO TT Ultralite

Sony's VAIO TT is a high-end ultraportables and pricey. (Expect to spend £1,599; or somewhere between £1,199 and £1,999, depending on the specification.) The TT uses an Ultra Low Voltage Intel Core 2 Duo with an ambient light sensor that varies the brightness of the 11.1 inch widescreen to provide a long usage with battery life for "up to 8 hours".

It has 2GB or 4GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive and a read/write DVD. However, thanks to the carbon fibre body, it still comes in at just 1.3kg -- slightly lighter than a 13.3 inch MacBook Air.

The UK version comes with Windows Vista Business whereas Sony USA is offering it with Vista Ultimate, 256GB of Solid State Drive (SSD), and Blu-ray for $4,344.99. An extra high-capacity battery adds another $249.99. Surely some users in the UK would prefer to have the SSD.

Of course, Sony has been down this road before with the ultra-thin X505, which weighed only 822g, and was also very desirable. With the increasing offering of netbooks by rivals, sure hope that Sony makes one soon and make a better one.

Sony Corp Forecasts Lower Profit

Consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. today slashed its earnings forecast for the 2008 fiscal year, saying profits will be down nearly 40 percent from a prediction the company made this summer and about 60 percent from the previous year.

Leave it to Sony to come up with innovation when it comes to TV.

First there was the Trinitron that the world so loved. Then the flat screen WEGA, then the beautiful Bravia.

Now the OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TV. The industry's first OLED television.

I saw this 11-inch OLED TV at a Sony shop and it was "Gosh!" It's so beautiful. The colour and picture is unbelievable. Reminds me of the time many years ago when I first saw Sony's DRC (Digital Reality Creation) Wega. Same feeling, but this time multiplied by 1 million times. Haha.

1 million? I am referring to the contrast ratio 1,000,000:1. Yes, that's right.

I thought the DRC Wega was the best I have seen - it was 'like' looking through a glass, you would think the man in the TV was standing behind the TV. Of course, then came the 1080p LCD HDTV and then you think, there is 'actually' a man behind the TV.

Now, with the OLED TV, you would start to swear, the man is 'really' behind the TV.

Anyway, get my point there?

Look at the side profile of the TV, it's only 3mm thick. Imagine holding three credit cards together.

Sony WHDI 1080p HDTV

Sony demo-ed a WHDI 1080p HDTV at the 2008 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) held earlier this year.

What is WHDI (wireless high definition interface)?

It's a technology developed by Amimon, an Israeli company.

Take a look at the current home theatre set up: cables, cables and more cables hooking up your Blu-Ray DVD player to your HDTV hookng up to your Receiver hooking up to your PC, etc.

Now, the solution provided by Amimon: No cables, Ma!

You can enjoy seamless streaming of High Definition movie in your living room while your DVD player sits in your bedroom. Really smart, huh?

Dvice reported that from the demo they saw, there was no distinguishable picture quality between a TV using WHDI and another with the conventional HDMI connection.

Say bye bye to your cables and wires now. Imagine now, playing a multiplayer PS3 game with your neighbour. That's right, you only need just one PS3 player since the WHDI coverage is about 100 feet.

It may be costly now with the WHDI chip installed in the hardware, but soon WHDI will be the norm in most sets like the Bluetooth technology. Just wait for the price to fall on this one.

Sony Helping Environment

One of the things that I am becoming more and more aware of is - taking good care of the environment!

It's great to know that companies around the world are taking the right directions to help the environment, including Sony.

Since 1989, Sony has been making full efforts to support the environment. Toward this end, we have sponsored many package redesign projects and are committed to considering the environment, not only to create environmentally-friendly designs but also to reduce material use.

Sony is constantly looking for ways to minimize it's packaging.

Here is an example of a Vaio accessory packaging.

This old packaging (left) shows the plastic tray inside the box. I am sure you are familiar with this if you have purchased Sony products before.

The new packaging on the left now shows a smaller plastic tray. It has reduced to 1/4th it's original size thus using less plastic.

Way to go.

Sony GPS NVU83T

I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Sony has GPS!

From the looks of it, the Sony NVU83T 4.8" Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator does look good.

It has a nice display and intuitive touch screen graphic interface (as with all Sony products graphic user interface or screen menu). It is just a breeze to navigate around the Sony GPS NVU83T because the onscreen display menu is easy to follow. Something which I have liked when I first used Sony products.

Not only the GPS Navigator provides clear visual on the display, it has spoken directions too. Of course spoken directions is nothing new.

This 1" thick Sony GPS also has anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coat. How nice! No more dirty paw marks on the screen. Also, the anti-glare means it won't distract you while driving in the day time.

The high contrast display also makes it very suitable to use in any lighting condition especially when the sun is shining brightly. Ha, but that doesn't mean that you have to keep adjusting the screen brightness when the sun hides behind the cloud. The built-in intelligent brightness control system can sense the amount of light around the unit and automatically adjusts both the brightness level and map color scheme for daytime or nighttime driving. Cool, eh?

Sony Lunch Kit

Sony produces Lunch Kit? or Lunch Box? You got to be kidding, right?

No, take a look. It's made for children I guess, judging from it's small fork and bright yellow colour. The fork is a short one about the size of a teaspoon.

Take a closer look. There it is: Sony Creative Products Inc.

The website of Sony Creative Products shows a lot of children stuffs including the famous Thomas and Friends train.

I don't understand much Japanese, but looks like Sony is in partnership with some companies to produce 'creative' products for children.

The lunch kit above is an example of partnership with Quickwit's.

So, can anyone please tell me what Sony Creative Products really is all about?

PSP-3000 Launched In Japan

PSP-3000 is ready to hit the market. Hope it reaches worldwide before this Christmas so that we can get our grubby hands on it.

The launch of the latest model, the PSP-3000, featuring an advanced liquid crystal display, will be part of Sony's efforts to boost sales toward the yearend season.

"The LCD is the face of a PSP, and it is an important feature of the 3000 model," Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Shawn Layden told a news conference in Japanese.

The PSP-3000 inherits the basic design and functions of the current PSP model, but its screen quality has been upgraded (good news) and it features a built-in microphone. Wonder if the upgraded screen would mean better picture quality too when it's connected to Sony's big screen Bravia LCD TV?

Sony Rice Cooker

My friend asked me whether Sony produces any washing machine?

I said, "No, but a long time ago it did have rice cooker." In fact, it was the first product ever produced by the founders of Sony.

The rice cooker was produced by Masaru Ibuka (one of the founders of Sony, the other was Akio Morita) factory after WWII. Their facility at that time was known as Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo or in English, Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute.

The project was a failure because the rice turned out undercooked or overcooked.

However, that experience definitely didn't stop Ibuka and Morita to great successes later with Sony.
